My film is a reflection of the specific things that inspire me: the tangible world and my time at Carver. My creative mind is encouraged by a broad range of sources, from the mechanical form of a pen to the community of friends around me. By looking beyond the digital distractions of everyday life, I find inspiration in the smallest details. This work demonstrates that while creativity often starts by one’s self, it is fueled by the people we learn with.

From my perspective, George Washington Carver’s quote seeks to utilize creativity not only to fabricate artwork, but also to solve problems, discover breakthroughs, and most importantly, drive progress. Carver desired societies that will promote the value of originality in thinking and foster the belief that ideas shouldn’t be considered to accept or reject their own possibility but more so as opportunities for growth. This practice of being creative to deal with setbacks such as mental block should especially be prominent in the field of game development. Since day one, my teachers in Carver Center have inspired me to dream boldly. My video in which I showcase the work that I produce throughout my journey at Carver Center emphasizes how each of my IT-AI/IMP projects have begun with a blank canvas, requiring a kick-start through creative brainstorming. It portrays how it is the power of creativity that encourages me to fill the emptiness and the same power that prompts me to cherish the path forward leading from now to the next possibility.

George Washington Carver’s words emphasize the importance of encouraging creativity, and my submission, my first independently created game, represents the moment my own creative mind was first truly stimulated. Before this, I had only worked on projects with direct help from my teachers: Mr. Z and Mr. Prichard. For our IMP final, we had to create a game independently within a short time period. I came up with an idea of a new spin on the Fruit Ninja game. The process of completing this game was very challenging, and there were times where I thought about making it smaller to make it easier to complete. But with my teachers convincing me otherwise, they encouraged me to continue to work on it.
George Washington Carver says that new developments come from a creative mind, and this project was my first “new development” because it required me to rely entirely on my own ideas while still being encouraged to push through difficulty. And without this encouragement I would not be able to start my creative journey. This project marked the beginning of my independent creative work. It is the foundation for everything I have made since, including the one I am currently making which will be the largest one I have ever created. Without this project, I would never have the confidence to work on games that I love making.
The way I interpret his words is similar to a snowball rolling down a hill. If that snowball had been left there without someone to propel it down that hill, it never would have been able to go down. But after it starts going down the hill, its own momentum is the one that carries it. Just like this snowball needs an initial push, creativity needs encouragement to begin growing on its own.
